Formerly known as Moe's Triathlon, the Bike Doctor is proud to announce that we are renaming our community event to #BelikeBruce Triathlon, in honour and loving memory of our friend and fellow athlete, Bruce Gordon. Bruce was a race director of Moe’s Triathlon for several years, and along with his family, provided support and encouragement to people to become part of active lifestyle communities.
Bike Doctor’s BeLIkeBruce Triathlon is meant to be friendly to beginners, but also provide a competitive environment for experienced athletes. Beginning in 2018 the race is being run through the non profit cycling club, Bike Doctor Detours, and will proceed as a fundraiser for Pancreatic Cancer research. As part of this BeLikeBruce event, following the triathlon there will also be a CrossFit community workout—another community Bruce was a part of.
The Gordon family has created the BeLikeBruce platform with the goal to advocate, take action and create awareness of the illness that took Bruce's life and changed theirs forever. The BeLikeBruce Triathlon intends to help achieve these goals by accepting monetary donations and directing a portion of the entry fees to pancreatic cancer research being done at the world class University of Saskatchewan Cancer Research Centre. With the link provided, you are able to make personal donaions to The U of S, College of Medicine with a note to direct the funds to the Bruce Gordon Memorial Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.
GET INTO THE SPIRIT
It was sometimes hard to tell if Bruce loved the event, or trash talking his friends more. So remember: Get out and do the BeLikeBruce Triathlon. There will be a community to support you. Have fun. Surprise yourself. Race hard! And if that’s your buddy ahead of you, catch up and give him or her the gears!
The race begins at Harry Bailey Pool where swimmers are sent off in waves according to your projected swim time.
Long course: 500 metres
Short course: 250 metres
Participants will then bike West towards the river and ride in loops.
Long course: 15 kilometres
Short course: 10 kilometres
The race ends with a run along the river on the Meewasin Trail.
Long course: 5 kilometres
Short course: 2.5 kilometres
The Bike Doctor created the community triathlon in 1995, and has continued as
our main sponsor ever since.
Bike Doctor Detours is a non-profit adventure cycling club that supports a community of cyclists. The club has taken on the organization of the #BeLikeBruce Triathlon for 2018 and is raising funds for Pancreatic Cancer Research to support Bruce's legacy.
The #BeLikeBruce Triathlon is raising awareness and funding for research for pancreatic cancer starting here at home in Saskatoon.
- Bruce was involved in the sport of triathlon as a competitor and volunteer for decades, making many friends along the way.
- Given that many of the people closest to Bruce were involved in athletics, we know that by being together in a physical activity has helped us to honour the life of our friend and support one another in our grieving process.
- Bruce believed in the power of sport - he loved to compete and challenge himself to improve and try new things. He lived an active and healthy lifestyle and that allowed him to make the most out of every day.
- A triathlon is an event that starts with a swim, then a bike ride, followed by a run. It's a great physical and mental test. This race has moderate distances so it's a great opportunity for people wanting a challenge to participate, even if they've never done a triathlon before.
The meaning will be unique to each person, but there are some common themes - family first, hard work & dedication, inclusive and encouraging, investing and giving back to the community. These are some of the most common attributes that come to mind.
The energy and experience of the BeLikeBruce community is unparalleled. The group is supportive, enthusiastic and inclusive. It's a great opportunity to try triathlon for the first time or to challenge your previous time on the new course.
Unable to race? We are looking for lots of excited, hardworking volunteers to help the event become the best it can be! If you are interested in volunteering, contact our volunteer coordinator, Reagan Wildeman, via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
